A patient came to me earlier this year, needing relief from elbow pain that had been bothering him for a few months. It affected his daily activities, and even the simple act of opening a door was painful. After a full evaluation, I decided on a course of treatment and then proceeded on that path.
After about 4 weeks of acupuncture treatments, the elbow pain was completely gone. He no longer felt pain, regained his full range of motion, and returned to his normally active lifestyle. You have to agree that 100% pain relief is an awesome result, right? But his story doesn’t end there.
He started to notice that as his elbow pain was decreasing, so were his IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) symptoms that he had been dealing with for years. On average, he would experience a flare up of abdominal symptoms every week-and-a-half to two weeks. These symptoms would last a couple of days at a time. Imagine dealing with that discomfort for years! Like most people new to acupuncture, he had no idea that we could treat anything other than pain. But much to his surprise, not only did his elbow pain disappear, but so did the IBD symptoms. As of this writing, he has not had any IBD symptoms in 4-1/2 months. Fascinating! So, what’s going on here?
Although this patient came to me focused on his elbow pain, he learned that we were treating his whole body. You see, Chinese medicine is all about attaining balance. Good health is about keeping the body in balance on many levels: balancing a particular meridian or organ system, balancing meridian/organ systems in relation to each other, balancing Yin and Yang within the body, etc. And why strive for balance? So that the body’s Qi can flow as easily as it is meant to, to keep all internal systems working smoothly and efficiently.
Once we attained the right level of balance for this patient, he was able to reap the incredible benefits. He now enjoys a much-improved quality of life, at a level that he didn’t think was even possible.
Is your body balanced and healthy? Would you like some help with getting back to your active lifestyle? Ask me how!
